Dual Vasoconstrictor and Vasodilator Innervation

چکیده
The innervation of the extrinsic uterine arterial supply of the guinea pig has been studied using an isolated perfused preparation. The preparation was normally at minimal tone and responded to periarterial stimulation by a vasoconstriction which was mimicked by norepinephrine and abolished by bretylium. Constrictor responses both to stimulation and to norepinephrine were similar in both pregnant and non-pregnant states. In pregnant preparations, raising the tone of the vessels with norepinephrine revealed a powerful dilator response to periarterial stimulation. This response was mimicked by acetylcholine, potentiated by anticholinesterases, reduced by hyoscine, and abolished by local anesthetic treatment. In contrast, virgin preparations showed only a weak dilator response to stimulation, while the response to acetylcholine even at high concentrations was usually negligible. Histochemical examination of the vessels revealed a dense plexus of fine nerve fibers exhibiting high acetylcholinesterase activity along the main uterine artery. The fibers lay in close apposition to the vascular muscle layer. Nerve fibers exhibited fluorescence for catecholamines were also abundant, but were distributed along the secondary as well as the main arteries. It is concluded that the uterine arterial supply of the guinea pig is innervated by both adrenergic constrictor and cholinergic dilator fibers. The dilator fibers appear to be functional only during pregnancy. The possibility of a noncholinergic dilator innervation is also discussed. ADDITIONAL

Innervation pattern of guinea pig pulmonary vasculature depends on vascular diameter.
The pulmonary vasculature is supplied by various neurochemically distinct types of nerve fibers, including sensory substance P-containing and autonomic noradrenergic, nitrergic, and cholinergic axons. Pharmacological experiments have suggested that various segments of the pulmonary vascular tree respond differently to the respective neuromediators. We, therefore aimed to determine histochemical...

OBJECTIVE To examine the changes that occur in the immunohistochemistry of vasoconstrictor and vasodilator transmitters in nerves supplying early and advanced colorectal polyps. SUBJECTS AND METHODS We studied the perivascular innervation of submucosal arterioles of colorectal polyps (n = 18) and the innervation of the epithelial layer of polyps compared to normal controls (n=8), using immuno...

Background: Diabetes is an important risk factor for cardiovascular events. Endothelial dysfunction is the main reason cause of disability and death in diabetic patients and death. The present study investigates the effects of metformin and glibenclamide on vasoconstrictive and vasodilative responses in the diabetic rat aorta. Methods: Rats were divided into four experimental groups (con...

Physiological importance in vasodilator innervation alleviating noradrenergic neurogenic vasoconstriction has not been clarified. Isolated monkey mesenteric artery strips denuded of the endothelium responded to nerve stimulation by electrical pulses or nicotine with a contraction, which was potentiated by Ng-nitro-L-arginine, a nitric oxide synthesis inhibitor, but not by the D-enantiomer. The ...

OBJECTIVES We analyzed whether mast cell stabilization by either ketotifen or tranilast could alter either sympathetic or nitrergic innervation function in rat mesenteric arteries. METHODS Electrical field stimulation (EFS)-induced contraction was analyzed in mesenteric segments from 6-month-old Wistar rats in three experimental groups: control, 3-hour ketotifen incubated (0.1 αmol/L), and 3-...
